Bend, April 21, 2017 -- Ranked 15th in the world’s arguably toughest sport, Bend, Oregon’s professional adventure racing team Team Bend Racing/Yogaslackers is competing in the Adventure Racing (AR) World Series Huairasinchi Adventure Race in Ecuador from April 28 to May 2.
On an unmarked course covering 400 miles, the team will navigate themselves through unknown terrain from checkpoint to checkpoint by means of trekking, running, mountain biking, kayaking, fixed ropes, and orienteering. In three to four days and with minimal sleep, the team will find themselves navigating approximately 70 miles, biking 117 miles, and kayaking just under 10 miles.
The Huairasinchi Adventure Race is one of eight AR World Series expeditions that unite in competition the world's best endurance athletes at premiere Qualifier events around the globe. Twenty-three teams will be competing in the Huairasinchi Adventure Race for spots in the AR World Championship, which will be hosted for the first time in the United States this August in Wyoming. Three teams from each AR World Series Qualifer go on to the AR World Championship.
The four Team Bend Racing/Yogaslackers teammates racing in this expedition include Jason Magness, Daniel Staudigel, Stephen Thompson, and Melissa Coombes. The additional members of the team not participating in this race are Alexandre Provost and Chelsey Magness.
Beyond entry into the ARWC, this race signifies something a bit more personal for the team.
“This is my first expedition race back from getting hip surgery last May,” said Jason. “I thought I was pretty much out of the sport, so this is a big test for me. As far as the team, we’ve had both of our females give birth to beautiful little babies in this last year. This whole year was restructuring and seeing if we could still be a world class international team with two mothers and a new hip, so this race is a pretty big deal for us.”
In addition to competing in expeditions around the world, Team Bend Racing/Yogaslackers host local Central Oregon adventure races for racers of all skill levels. Find more information about the team, the organization, and upcoming events at http://www.bendracing.com.
